Frequently Asked Questions

1. What Are Subtle Energy Therapies, And Who Can Receive It?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) as we know it today is a relatively new healing practice, founded in the 1920's by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan. It is based in ancient Eastern culture and remedial wisdom. Reiki energy itself is considered to be thousands of years old, and the practice of channeling it for healing is merely a rediscovery by Dr. Usui. The two words, Rei (omnipresent spiritual consciousness, divine guidance) and Ki (think of Chi, meaning life force energy, which is in everyone and everything) form together to mean "divinely-guided life force energy".

Reiki benefits any person (child, man, and woman) and any living creature, including but not limited to companion animals (any species, breed, or temperament). Reiki’s benefits are cumulative and become more powerful and transformative the more you receive it. As with any preventive health measure or healing remedy, consistent and/or periodic treatment is encouraged for best possible effects and outcomes. True, lasting healing takes time but is equal to the effort and care that we put into it.

     Biofield Tuning

Biofield Tuning is based on the premise that the human biofield - the energy field that surrounds and permeates our bodies - is intricately connected with our conscious & subconscious mind, including all of our memories.  All physical, mental and emotional disorders can be perceived as "dissonance" in our energy fields.  As a sound therapy, and through a combing process using activated tuning forks, Biofield Tuning is able to diminish and resolve this dissonance, providing relief of corresponding physical, mental and/or emotional symptoms.

Using sound to heal the body is not a new concept. Singing bowls were said to be found in Mesopotamia 5,000 years ago, and are popularly used in Tibetan and Nepalese cultures. Australian Aborigines have their deep base didgeridoo. Native Americans utilize drums, rattles, and chanting for physical and spiritual healing. The gong has experienced cross-cultural appeal for thousands of years, from ancient Egypt to Greece, Rome, Persia, and all across the East. Modern Western medical professionals are known to use tuning forks to test hearing loss as well as identifying bone fracture, and pulsing sound waves via Lithotripsy are used to break up kidney stones. The modality of Biofield Tuning as it is currently practiced was born out of 20+ years experience from sound therapy pioneer, Eileen Day McKusick.

       Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT; Tapping)

Tapping is a more modern form of energy therapy with deep roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This incredibly gentle therapy is effective because it accesses the endpoints of the body’s energy meridians (channels for chi) while focusing on current pain, stress, illness, trauma, and challenges. In doing so, the body is able to easily process and release the “charge” of these unpleasant emotions and sensations. This is a quick but powerful process!

Ahead of sessions, clients are asked to fill out a “Tapping Tree” analysis worksheet. This self-exploratory tool lays the foundation for how far into their past their current issue stems (from the current symptom/ailment, to the emotions behind those symptoms, to the defining moments in one's life, to the beliefs we have formed about ourselves). Through a unique combination of acupressure, emotional counseling, and neuro-linguistic coaching, the client is guided through rounds of gentle meridian tapping and supportive, mindful focus statements to release old behavioral & emotional patterns. Each session ends with 15 mins of Reiki to assimilate & recharge!

2. What Conditions Can Energy Balancing Benefit?

Reiki does not attack disease. Rather, Reiki supports our well-being and strengthens our natural ability to heal by encouraging balance.” (Pamela Miles, Reiki - A Comprehensive Guide)

"(Biofield Tuning's) basic premise is that it assists the body and mind to relax out of habitual patterns of tension, imbalance, and stress response, and in doing so facilitates self-healing." (Eileen Day McKusick, - Tuning the Human Biofield).*

"“Though we’re not yet sure why, tapping seems to turn off the amygdala’s alarm—deactivating the brain’s arousal pathways. Tapping on the meridian endpoints sends a calming response to the body, and the amygdala recognizes that it’s safe. What’s more, tapping while experiencing—or even discussing—a stressful event counteracts that stress and reprograms the hippocampus, which compares past threats with present signals and tells the amygdala whether or not the present signal is an actual threat.” (Nick Ortner - The Tapping Solution)

  • Promotion of overall well-being, relaxation, and peace

  • Depression & anxiety

  • Deep emotional pain (often from childhood or unresolved relationships)

  • Chronic pain/inflammatory issues

  • Strengthens self-esteem and self-agency

  • Prenatal health* and Post-partum recovery

  • Assists in body-love and acceptance (weight-loss, eating disorders, etc)

  • Spiritual wellness and fortitude

  • Encourages emotional release

  • Clears toxins*

  • Insomnia and sleep/fatigue issues

  • Gut health (constipation, IBS, nervous tummy, reflux, etc)

  • Assists in recovery from abuse of any kind (substance, emotional, physical, etc)

  • Mental clarity

  • And much more!

     * While the Biofield Tuning approach has many of the same gentle and deep healing effects as Reiki,  is not advised for individuals who are extremely ill as it may create a strong healing response in the system. As the body releases tension, any toxins that have been held in constricted tissue are released which has the capacity to produce flu-like symptoms, exhaustion, waves of emotion, loose stools and in extreme cases (very rare) rashes and vomiting. Cancer, pregnancy, palliative care, and pacemakers are contraindicated in Biofield Tuning.

3. Is Reiki A Religion?

Very gently, very quietly, very gradually, Reiki opens an inner spiritual connection that can significantly change the way a person experiences life, a sense of connectedness that can help transform negative attitudes and create a sense of meaning and purpose. This may be the most valuable gift Reiki offers.” (Pamela Miles, Reiki - A Comprehensive Guide)

Reiki is not a religion. Rather, it represents both a primordial consciousness (Universal Wisdom/Divine Guidance) and a practice through which that intelligent, healing consciousness is accessed. At its core, this can be labeled as a spiritual practice rather than a religious one (please see the disclaimer below for my personal understanding of this practice). Some, like myself, understand this consciousness to be God, while others call it Source, Creator, Universe, or whatever divine intelligence they believe to be the ultimate source of our existence. Since Reiki operates with the understanding that this source is universal and accessible to everyone (because it is part of and in everyone and everything), it is not uncommon for people of religious backgrounds to gravitate toward this practice.

Reiki is non-denominational. I, myself, am a practicing Methodist and a clergy spouse to boot. That does not at all mean, however, that I will only work with Christians or that I will push my beliefs on you.  While many references are made in the Bible about healing touch, which informs and blends with my own practice of Reiki, this is a personal belief that does not need to be shared in order to feel the healing effects of Reiki.  My goal is to encourage your body toward healing, not convert you.

(Personal disclaimer: I find it important to share my understanding of the practice. To me, Reiki is the action of the Holy Spirit that, when channeled through the practitioner, provides the healing grace necessary to restore us back to our natural state of peace, love, and joy. We were commissioned by Christ into a ministry of healing [Matthew 14: 35-36, Mark 28:18], and this has always resonated with me as a profound spiritual truth and gift.)

4. Is Energy Balancing For Me?

Are Reiki, Tapping, or Biofield Tuning a miracle pill for disease, heart-ache, chronic pain, spiritual crisis, crippling guilt/anger, or any number of seemingly insurmountable obstacles currently keeping us from moving into our desired life path? No. Aside from the fact that nothing is instantly curative, what we can take from the practice of (or receiving of) subtle energy therapies is the calm assurance that, when we invite this type of healing into our bodies, we are inviting a deep wisdom into the consciousness of our very cells that has the capacity to guide us back to the person we have always been. We were created with everything we need to be whole and happy, and life has somehow muddled and confused our understanding of this universal truth.

Treating the body from an energetic standpoint allows one to address oneself just as they are, even in their brokenness, and gently assists the body with its own innate ability to heal itself (the biological act of homeostasis). Even in the throes of a life-long condition, subtle energy therapies can help provide more physical comfort, calm disposition, clarity, and a sense of relaxation often not felt by the client in years, and how is that not in itself a healing?

The effects of Reiki are cumulative, so the more you receive of it, the better! There is no danger of EVER overdosing in the practice of this healing system, and coincidentally there is no health crisis or situation that presents a contraindication of use. Tapping can be used as a stand-alone therapy or in conjunction with any other modality, allopathic (Western) or holistic (Eastern). It empowers the individual deactivate the amygdala's danger response (which may be in the "on" switch 24/7), enabling them to put down fear/stress and walk forward with confidence, compassion, and a healthy change in perspective about the world and one's self. Biofield Tuning, while being equally gentle and non-invasive, does carry some contraindications with use. Please see my disclaimer under FAQ #2 for a full description of limitations.

5. What can you expect to experience when you book an appointment at Sacred Touch, LLC?

Reiki is a gentle, hands-on practice with no need to disrobe or be physically uncomfortable during your session. My aim is your total comfort! After becoming acquainted and we briefly discuss the purpose of your visit and what you hope to achieve, you will be asked to make yourself at ease on a Reiki (massage) table, during which time I will be placing my hands lightly and discretely over various chakras (read: a fancy Sanskrit-derived word that simply refers to the important energy centers that are critical to the balancing of your overall energy system; there are seven).

Please know that if you are uncomfortable with touch for ANY reason, Reiki is still effective without physical touch and I will simply place my hands over your body in your energy field (sometimes known as the aura, etheric field, or biofield).

Following a session I like to reserve 15 minutes for discussion or reflection (optional but helpful in understanding your session) and anything you would like to address, including future appointments. For some, this is an emotional and powerful experience because of the deep healing that has been initiated. For some, this is an extremely relaxing experience akin to how one feels after taking a “power nap” or receiving a full body massage. Experience is individual and beautiful in its own way.

Biofield Tuning:

During a Biofield Tuning session, a client lies fully clothed on a treatment table while the practitioner activates a tuning fork and scans the body slowly beginning from a distance. The practitioner is feeling for resistance and turbulence in the client's energy field, as well as listening for a change in the overtones and undertones of the tuning fork. When the practitioner encounters a turbulent area he/she continues to activate the tuning fork and hold it in that specific spot. Research suggests the body's organizational energy uses the steady coherent vibrational frequency of the tuning fork to "tune" itself.  In short order, the dissonance resolves and the sense of resistance gives way. This appears to correspond to the release of tension within the body.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT; Tapping)

Clients are asked to fill out a “Tapping Tree” analysis (worksheet) ahead of sessions. This self-exploratory tool lays the foundation for how far into their past their current issue stems (we analyze current symptoms and emotions related to those symptoms, connecting them to past experiences and the core beliefs you have formed about yourself). Through a unique combination of acupressure, emotional counseling, and neuro-linguistic coaching, I guide the client through several rounds of gentle meridian tapping and supportive, mindful focus statements to release old behavioral & emotional patterns. The tapping pressure is no more invasive than that used to tap cornstarch free from a clogged spout. Each session ends with 15 mins of Reiki to assimilate & recharge.

I highly encourage clients to drink plenty of water for the remainder of their day since Reiki & Biofield Tuning, like massage, are detoxifying to the body as a natural part of the healing process. Please do not plan on immediately doing any stressful activities that may take your mind and body out of the gift of blissful relaxation you have just given it.
